What Is It?

Permanent makeup (cosmetic tattooing) uses micropigmentation to implant pigment into the superficial dermis of areas such as eyebrows (microblading or powder fill), eyeliner, and lip liner. It provides a long-lasting cosmetic effect that eliminates daily application for defined periods.

How It Works

A hand tool (microblading) or digital tattoo machine deposits pigment into the skin using fine needles. The practitioner maps and designs the shape before treatment. Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand. A touch-up session at 4–8 weeks is standard to refine colour and fill any areas that did not retain pigment evenly.

Realistic Results

Realistic hair stroke brows, defined eyes, or naturally tinted lips that last 1–3 years depending on skin type, sun exposure, and aftercare. Oily skin retains pigment less well. Regular top-up appointments are needed to maintain colour intensity.

Recovery

The treated area appears darker and bolder immediately after treatment. Colour lightens by 30–50% as healing completes over 4–6 weeks. Slight scabbing is normal and must not be picked. Avoid sun, sweat, and water on the area for 7–10 days.

Risks & Complications

  • !Colour fading unevenly or turning a warm/orange tone over time
  • !Allergic reaction to the pigment
  • !Infection if sterile technique is not maintained
  • !Migration of pigment over time
  • !Difficulty removing unwanted results (requires laser treatment)

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Practitioner does not use sterile, single-use needle cartridges
  • No patch test offered for pigment allergies
  • Provider does not map and discuss the shape with you before starting
  • Use of low-quality or unbranded pigments with unknown composition
  • No consent form or aftercare instructions provided

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • What brand of pigment do you use, and is it certified for cosmetic use?
  • Do you offer a patch test for pigment allergies?
  • How many sessions are included in the quoted price?
  • What does the fading process look like, and how will the colour change over time?
  • If I dislike the result, how can it be corrected or removed?
