What Is It?
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects a deviated nasal septum — the wall of cartilage and bone separating the two nostrils. When the septum is significantly off-centre, it can obstruct airflow, cause chronic congestion, snoring, or recurring sinus infections. Septoplasty restores a straighter septum to improve breathing.
How It Works
The surgeon makes an incision inside the nose, lifts the mucosal lining, and either repositions, trims, or replaces the deviated cartilage and bone. No external cuts are made. The mucosa is replaced and secured with sutures or soft splints to hold the septum in its corrected position while healing.
Realistic Results
The primary benefit is significantly improved nasal airflow, which most patients notice within a few weeks once swelling subsides. Chronic headaches and mouth breathing caused by obstruction often resolve. The external appearance of the nose is unchanged unless combined with rhinoplasty.
Recovery
Soft nasal packing or splints are typically removed within 3–7 days. Mild congestion and swelling persist for 2–3 weeks. Most patients return to work within a week and can exercise again after 3–4 weeks.
Risks & Complications
- !Temporary nasal congestion and crusting during healing
- !Risk of septal perforation (rare hole in the septum)
- !Incomplete correction requiring revision
- !Changes in nasal sensation (usually temporary)
- !Small risk of infection or excessive bleeding
Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely
- ⚑Surgeon does not perform pre-operative nasal endoscopy
- ⚑No discussion of whether you snore, have sinus issues, or use nasal sprays
- ⚑Clinic offers to combine cosmetic changes without discussing implications
- ⚑No post-operative follow-up plan provided
- ⚑Surgeon cannot explain the specific deviation they are correcting
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- Have you reviewed my CT scan or endoscopy to map the deviation?
- Will you use splints or packing, and when are they removed?
- Is my septum the sole cause of my breathing problem, or are turbinates also involved?
- What is the likelihood I will need a revision?
- When can I safely blow my nose after surgery?
