What Is It?
Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that tightens the vaginal canal and the surrounding muscles that may have become lax following childbirth or with ageing. It improves both functional and intimate quality of life. It is performed by a gynaecologist or plastic surgeon with intimate anatomy specialisation.
How It Works
Excess vaginal mucosa is removed, and the underlying perineal muscles are sutured together to narrow the vaginal opening and canal. The incisions are placed inside the vagina and along the perineum, making them invisible externally. Absorbable sutures are used throughout.
Realistic Results
A tighter vaginal tone with improved muscle support. Most patients report significant functional improvement. Full healing and assessment of results are complete by 3–6 months. The improvement is permanent, though a subsequent pregnancy would require repeat surgery.
Recovery
No sexual intercourse or tampon use for 6–8 weeks. Strenuous exercise is restricted for 4–6 weeks. Mild swelling and discomfort for 1–2 weeks. A high-fibre diet and stool softeners prevent constipation and straining.
Risks & Complications
- !Temporary pain, swelling, and bruising
- !Wound dehiscence (sutures opening) particularly if the patient strains early in recovery
- !Overcorrection causing painful intercourse
- !Changes in vaginal sensation
- !Infection requiring antibiotic treatment
