What Is It?

Vascular lasers specifically target blood vessels and vascular lesions including rosacea, facial thread veins, port wine stains, cherry angiomas, spider veins, and haemangiomas. The main devices are the pulsed-dye laser (PDL, 585/595nm) and Nd:YAG (1064nm), both targeting oxyhaemoglobin in blood vessels.

How It Works

The laser wavelength is absorbed by oxyhaemoglobin in the vessel wall. The heat destroys the vessel, which is then reabsorbed by the body over 2–4 weeks. PDL is highly effective for superficial vessels and port wine stains. Nd:YAG targets deeper vessels and is safer for darker skin types.

Realistic Results

Significant reduction or complete clearance of targeted vascular lesions in 1–3 sessions. Thread veins on the face often clear completely in a single session. Diffuse rosacea background redness requires 2–4 sessions.

Recovery

PDL causes bruising (purpura) that lasts 7–14 days — this is the intended therapeutic effect. Nd:YAG causes less bruising but more redness for 3–5 days. Sun protection is important during recovery.

Risks & Complications

  • !PDL bruising is expected and can be significant
  • !Temporary pigmentation changes at the treatment site
  • !Blister formation if settings are too aggressive
  • !Incomplete vessel clearance requiring repeat sessions

Red Flags — Choose a Clinic Safely

  • Provider does not warn about bruising from PDL before treatment
  • Wrong device used for the vascular lesion type — e.g., IPL used for port wine stains (PDL is more appropriate)
  • Dark skin treated with PDL without adjusting to Nd:YAG
  • No sun protection advice post-treatment

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • Which laser are you using — PDL or Nd:YAG — and why is that appropriate for my lesion?
  • Will I bruise after treatment, and for how long?
  • How many sessions are needed for my specific lesion?
  • Are there any vascular lesions that should be medically assessed before laser treatment?
  • What aftercare is needed to protect the treated vessels?
